Convert a bank CSV to QIF

QIF is a simple, old text format that many personal-finance programs still import. Convert your bank CSV or Excel export to QIF on your own device.

Drop your bank CSV or Excel (.xlsx) file here or click to choose a file. It is read by your browser and never uploaded.

How to import a QIF file

Quicken for Windows

  1. Convert your file above and click QIF. Keep the QIF date setting on MM/DD/YYYY for US and Canadian Quicken.
  2. Back up your Quicken data.
  3. Go to File → File Import → QIF File.
  4. Choose the account to import into, select the file, make sure Transactions is ticked, and click Import.
  5. Check the register. QIF imports skip Quicken's review and matching step, so look for duplicates.

GnuCash and other apps

In GnuCash use File → Import → Import QIF and follow the wizard. It asks you to confirm the date format and to map the QIF account to a GnuCash account.

QIF vs QFX/OFX

QIF has no transaction IDs, so apps can't reliably detect duplicates, and current Quicken versions don't apply renaming rules or memorized payees to QIF imports. If your app accepts QFX or OFX, use that. QuickBooks generally does not import bank transactions from QIF; use the QBO converter instead.

FAQ

Which date format should I choose for QIF?

US and Canadian Quicken expect MM/DD/YYYY. For UK/EU apps that read DD/MM/YYYY, change "Dates in QIF/CSV output" before downloading.

What account types are supported?

Bank accounts (checking, savings, money market) are written as !Type:Bank and credit cards as !Type:CCard.

Are categories included?

No. Bank CSVs rarely carry categories that match your app's list, so assign them after import.

Is my bank file uploaded anywhere?

No. The page reads the file with your browser's built-in file APIs and builds the output on your device. There is no server-side code: you can open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab while converting, and see that no file data is sent. See the privacy page.

Is it free?

Yes for up to 10 transactions per file in every format, with full preview and editing. Pro removes the limit for $29 one-time. Try the free export in your software first. If a file you export with Pro won't import into the software you made it for, you get a full refund within 30 days of purchase. See the refund policy.
